EQUILIBRE HORSE THEATRE
|
'A question of balance' he said, leaning the small weight of his body against the air. Beneath the press of his thigh the mare stepped away, hoof over delicate hoof, catching his weight again.' |

Imagine the sensuality of the silken skin of a horse gleaming under a spotlight, the
primal beat of drums keeping time as a vibrant dancer responds to the horse, the two
performing a 'pas de deux' of man and beast, of power and grace. This is a moment from EQUILIBRE, a performance in celebration of the horse. The theatre draws together horses, poets, dancers, musicians and artists, interweaving their work towards a common theme. It is an original form of theatre, new to this country. The home of the company is in Abercegir, 3 miles from Machynlleth in mid Wales, where an indoor arena, adjoining the stables, provides an authentic equestrian atmosphere. The space is transformed by use of professional design and lighting. The majority of the company are residents of mid Wales although sonic are from further afield, the performance aims to reflect a welsh identity. Artists from a variety of disciplines stimulate a cross fertilisation of ideas; and the unusual location, with additional dimension of a strong equine presence, inspires creativity and originality. Whilst providing a sophisticated form of expression, the primitive physicality of the horse must be echoed by other performers. The proximity of the audience to the performance heightens the sense of risk, this is crucial to the quality of emotion we aim to evoke. Overturning some traditional views of horsemanship, we offer our belief that classical riding is comparable to other expressive art forms. The training of the hoyse and a classical dancer is equally demanding afterall the word 'ballet ' originates from the training of horses in the 17th century French Court. In EQUILIBRE you will find an exercise in co-operation, a melding of the spirit of the horse and the spirit of man. This perfect harmony has been described as 'riding for the soul'.
In 2001 we will devise a completely new show which is to be loosely based on a poem written by Ronald Duncan called 'The Horse'. For furth information or tickets contact Jane Lloyd-Francis. |
